Welcome This course is required for all graduate students who intend to serve as teaching assistants in the Department of Health Policy and Management, and is open to students from other departments as well. One purpose of the course is to familiarize future TAs with the logistical aspects of working in the department: How do TAs get on the payroll? Who will they work for? What do they need to know about the law? Perhaps more importantly, the course will focus on the "vocation" of teaching and the elements of good teaching in the "complex social environments" found in all classrooms. Students in this class will get exposure to some of the sub-skills involved in teaching, including grading, lecturing, leading discussions, and using questions effectively. While this course is not intended to provide exhaustive training in teaching methodology, TAs who take this course should come away with an awareness of the complexity and richness of teaching as well as access to education resources. Please note that this course is transitioning to a self-directed module rather than a traditional interactive online course. We're interested in your feedback on this new format. I will be responding to your questions and course assignments, but there will be no livetalk sessions or group work. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or concerns, or would like some additional help with teaching issues. We hope you enjoy the course! Important Notes
