
Overview
For students, faculty and staff in the Bloomberg School of Public Health, PubMed is the first stop for research. Whether you are working on a paper for a class or a grant for an organization, there is good reason to begin with PubMed: it is by far the largest, most comprehensive database in biomedicine. It provides access to more than 15 million citations, spanning more than 50 years and thousands of journals. It is the most-used resource of its kind at Hopkins. PubMed is a tool you will use time and time again.
This set of tutorials is designed to help you use PubMed efficiently and effectively and build a strong research foundation. Proficient and efficient literature research is the basis of superior scholarship:
- It inspires good papers and projects.
- It expands classroom lessons.
- It gives life to questions both theoretical and practical.
We hope you find these tutorials informative and enlightening. We are confident that they will ultimately help you save time and improve your research efforts.
Objectives
After successfully completing these tutorials, you will be able to:
- Navigate to PubMed by way of WelchWeb
- Identify appropriate search terms for your research questions
- Run successful searches
- Limit searches using available tools
- Identify articles that provide the full text of articles
- Locate specific articles in PubMed quickly and simply
- Order articles using the LoansomeDoc/Weldoc document delivery system

David Wright, BA David Wright has nearly ten years of experience working at Hopkins libraries. He currently serves as a senior reference specialist at the Welch Library, where he teaches and supports various research applications and resources. Dave also works to bring new tools and technologies to Hopkins. Dave received his BA in American Studies from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In August, 2005, Dave leaves Hopkins to begin law school at the University of Richmond. |

Susan Rohner, MLS, BS Susan Rohner is a public health librarian with the Welch Medical Library of the Johns Hopkins University. She works at the Lilienfeld Memorial Library serving the students, faculty, and staff of the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Susan received her MLS from Syracuse University and a BS in Health Education from the State University of New York College at Cortland. She is an adjunct instructor at Syracuse University, where she teaches a course on medical librarianship. She has previous work experience in family planning clinics and a county health department. |
