Course Syllabus


 

Course Description

Introduces concepts, terminology, and methodology in the practice of industrial hygiene, and identifies resource materials. Includes lectures, typical problems, demonstrations, and a walk-through survey.


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the legal, professional, and ethical framework for the practice of industrial hygiene
  • Define basic terms and technical concepts integral to the practice of industrial hygiene
  • Explain the differences between chemical (gases/vapors, dusts/mists/fumes), physical, and biological agents in the workplace
  • Calculate time-weighted averages
  • Convert between various units of exposure (for example, mg/m3 to ppm)
  • Calculate and interpret noise exposures and doses
  • Identify the basic concepts of workplace exposure assessment
  • Describe the hierarchy of controls and how it applies to hazard control
  • Integrate various concepts into a broader occupational/environmental health practice
  • Provide a basis for advanced course work in occupational safety and health

Course Format

This course is divided into five modules:

Module 1: Introduction

  • Lecture 1: Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
  • Lecture 2: Standards and Guidelines and Ethical Code of Conduct
  • Lecture 3: Industrial Hygiene Concepts

Module 2: Anticipation and Recognition

  • Lecture 4: Particulate Matter
  • Lecture 5: Gases and Vapors
  • Lecture 6: Noise
  • Lecture 7: Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Radiation

Module 3: Evaluation

  • Lecture 8: Industrial Hygiene Measurements I—Particulate Matter
  • Lecture 9: Industrial Hygiene Measurement II—Gases and Vapors
  • Lecture 10: Biological Monitoring and Total Human Exposure Assessment
  • Lecture 11: Exposure Assessment Strategies

Module 4: Control

  • Lecture 12: Hierarchy of Controls
  • Lecture 13: Principles of Ventilation
  • Lecture 14: Personal Protective Equipment and other Control Options

Grading Policy

Your grade will be based on a midterm (40%), final examination (45%), and class participation (15%). Both exams will be open-book and open-note; they are not proctored. Exams will be provided online and you will submit your responses via the course Drop Box. See the Course Content page for all important examination dates and deadlines.
