Welcome

Public Health Biology is designed to help you understand the biology of infectious diseases, inherited diseases, and cancer-as well as understand how these diseases affect populations in terms of public health. The course will also emphasize current control strategies including treatment, vaccination, and preventative measures.

Public Health Biology will discuss:

  • The ecology and population biology of diseases
  • The nature and transmission of infectious diseases and the host response to infection
  • The treatment, management, and genetics of infectious diseases
  • Current molecular techniques and how these are being applied to public health problems.
  • Non-infectious diseases such as cancer
  • Current issues in public health biology including obesity, reproductive health, and factors affecting disease susceptibility during development
Instructional resources for the course include lectures, practice questions, reading assignments, electronic bulletin board discussions, and LiveTalk sessions.

This course is recommended for students who have at taken at least one college-level biology course. Students who do not have a biology background may find it necessary to do some extra background reading of biology-related textbooks, etc., during the course.
