Her presentation highlighted the conclusions of the 2008 Human Rights Defenders Forum and recommendations for incorporating a human rights agenda into the new presidential administration’s foreign policy. Scott, PhD, product engineer Even though the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is not new to Public Health, new supplemental technologies continue to emerge. In this presentation, Dr. Scott presents some new spatial statistical tools, which can both supplement and extend traditional GIS analysis. These tools allow public health practitioners to find new answers to old hot spot analysis questions such as "where is the disease outbreak concentrated?" and "how can scarce resources, such as medical, police, and fire units, be best deployed?" In this presentation, Dr. Scott will also discuss spatial and temporal pattern analysis (is the problem remaining geographically fixed or is it spreading?) and spatial regression analysis (why are cancer rates so high in a particular area?). Recorded June 27, 2008Christopher Dye, PhD In this lecture you will learn about the changing epideilogy of tuberculosis and discuss the future needs of TB control. Recorded live in Becton Hall. Chris Dye began professional life as an ecologist in the UK, having taken degrees in biology and zoology from the universities of York and Oxford. After becoming interested in communicable disease ecology (epidemiology) on a postdoctoral fellowship at Imperial College London, he moved to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to bring his epidemiological research closer to public health. He was head of the School's Vector Biology and Epidemiology Unit for several years before being recruited by WHO to work on something completely different - tuberculosis. Still an ecologist in heart and mind, he now coordinates the department's work in epidemiology and economics, the goal of which is to provide better evidence in support of the policy and practice of TB control. Chris has published around 200 scientific articles on the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases. From 2006-2009, he is also Gresham Professor of Physic in the City of London (www.gresham.ac.uk).

An in-depth look at the public health problem of guinea worm in Nigeria, told by Dr. William Brieger, who spends a great deal of time travelling from the US to Nigeria. Recorded live from Sheldon Hall. Bill Brieger is currently Professor in the Health Systems Program of the Department of International Health at JHU. He was a Professor in Health Education at the African Regional Health Education Centre, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, from 1976 to 2002. He received a BA in political science and a MPH in health education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his DrPH from the Johns Hopkins University. At the School of Public Health, he first worked as an adjunct associate professor in the Health Systems Program, Department of International Health, and has been a full-time faculty member since 2002. He lectures on the principles of health education, the social and behavioral foundations of primary health care, personnel development and training methods, communication theory, qualitative research, and program consultation skills.
