Welcome to the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases course. We are looking forward to
working with you over the next eight weeks. The goal of the course is to help you understand
the basic methods for infectious disease epidemiology. We'll do this by introducing you
to a series of case studies through which you will learn the important disease syndromes
and entities. The case studies focus on acute respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases,
hepatitis, HIV, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, malaria, and other vector-borne
diseases. In addition, lectures throughout the course will focus on the methods used in this
field. You will learn the definitions and nomenclature and how the outbreak investigations,
disease surveillance, case-control studies, cohort studies, laboratory diagnosis, molecular
epidemiology, dynamics of transmission, and assessment of vaccine field effectiveness are
used to study the diseases.
